The frequency of certificate and licence suspensions resulting from marine mishaps may increase due to amendments to the enforcement and penalty provisions of the Canada Shipping Act. The Guild is pleased to provide optional certificate coverage to members on a voluntary basis. Benefits are paid in compensation for the actual loss of remuneration due to the suspension or revocation of the member's certificate or licence, by any duly authorized Canadian Authority, Board, Commission or Court as a result of a marine occurrence involving the member acting in an official capacity as a Ship's Master, Deck or Engineer Officer or as a Pilot licenced to furnish Pilotage services in the district in which the marine occurrence takes place.

Benefits are payable monthly for a period not exceeding 12 months in the case of the suspension and not exceeding 18 months in the case of the revocation of the said certificate or licence. Monthly benefits paid shall not exceed the basic remuneration normally received by the member and no benefits are payable for any period during which the member is normally unemployed. A payment on account of personal effects is also payable to a maximum of $2,500.00 and a daily subsistence allowance of $30.00 will also be paid during a suspension.
